Thermal imaging

Many electrical faults develop gradually, generating excess heat long before they cause equipment failure or operational disruption. Electrical Testing Services (ETS) uses thermal imaging to identify abnormal temperature patterns in energised electrical equipment, allowing potential issues to be detected early.

We are NATA accredited and ISO triple-certified for quality, safety and the environment.

Many electrical faults develop gradually, generating excess heat long before they cause equipment failure or operational disruption. Electrical Testing Services (ETS) uses thermal imaging to identify abnormal temperature patterns in energised electrical equipment, allowing potential issues to be detected early.

By identifying overheating connections, overloaded circuits and failing components before they become critical, thermal imaging supports proactive maintenance, reduces the risk of fire and unplanned downtime, and helps organisations improve the reliability of their electrical assets.

Thermal Imaging

Find developing faults before equipment fails

Infrared thermography measures the heat emitted by electrical and mechanical equipment while it remains in normal operation. Differences in temperature between comparable components can indicate loose connections, overloaded circuits, phase imbalance or deteriorating equipment before a fault results in failure.

Thermal imaging is particularly valuable for switchboards, critical plant and heavily loaded electrical systems where unexpected outages can disrupt operations, compromise safety or result in costly downtime. Regular inspections also establish a condition baseline, allowing temperature trends to be monitored over time and emerging issues to be identified before they become critical.

What thermal imaging can identify

Thermal imaging can detect a range of conditions that may indicate developing faults, including:

  • Loose or high-resistance electrical connections
  • Overloaded circuits and electrical components
  • Phase imbalance and uneven electrical loading
  • Overheating fuses, circuit breakers, terminals and cables
  • Deteriorating electrical and mechanical components
  • Abnormal temperature patterns in switchboards, plant and operating equipment

A thermal anomaly does not always indicate an immediate failure, but it highlights equipment that requires further investigation. The priority for corrective action depends on the severity of the temperature variation, the condition of the asset and the operational risk associated with the equipment.

How a thermal imaging inspection is completed

Thermal imaging inspections are carried out while equipment is operating under a representative electrical load, allowing abnormal heat patterns to be identified under normal operating conditions. Where safe and authorised, switchboard covers and equipment panels are opened to provide access for inspection.

The thermographer scans relevant electrical and mechanical assets, comparing temperatures across similar components, phases and connections to identify potential anomalies. Thermal images and inspection observations are recorded during the survey, with all work completed in accordance with site access requirements and safe work procedures.

Inspection findings are compiled into a report that highlights areas requiring further investigation, maintenance or ongoing monitoring, enabling clients to prioritise corrective action based on the level of risk.

Thermal imaging reports and corrective action

Recorded thermal images

The report includes the thermal image and a corresponding visual reference where available. This gives the maintenance team a clear record of the temperature pattern found.

Identifying the affected component

Each irregularity is tied to the relevant board, circuit or component so technicians can locate it efficiently. The report gives the maintenance team a specific asset location for further investigation.

Planning repairs and future inspections

The report supports decisions about urgent investigation, planned repairs and repeat inspections. Corrective electrical work can then be scheduled around operational priorities or a planned shutdown.

Why organisations choose ETS for thermal imaging

Qualified thermographers

ETS inspections are completed by trained personnel using established inspection procedures and consistent reporting methods, providing reliable results across individual sites and national property portfolios.

Technical expertise that supports better decisions

Thermographers understand how electrical load, equipment type and environmental conditions influence thermal images. This expertise helps distinguish normal operating temperatures from conditions that may indicate developing faults.

Clear, actionable reporting

Inspection reports combine thermal images, visual photographs and asset information to clearly identify affected equipment. Findings are prioritised to support maintenance planning, further investigation and corrective action.

Accredited systems and quality assurance

ETS operates under NATA accreditation for applicable inspection activities and maintains certified management systems for quality, workplace safety and environmental management.

Proven experience

Since 2002, ETS has delivered thermal imaging, electrical testing and condition monitoring services for organisations throughout Australia, supporting both single-site operations and complex national portfolios.

Thermal imaging services across Australia

ETS provides thermal imaging inspections through a network of offices and strategically located technicians across Australia, delivering consistent reporting and service standards wherever your sites are located.

Arrange a thermal imaging inspection

Thermal imaging is most effective when equipment is operating under a representative load, making it possible to identify developing faults before they lead to equipment failure or unplanned downtime. Whether you need a one-off inspection or ongoing condition monitoring, ETS can provide a tailored inspection program with clear reporting to support maintenance planning and asset reliability.
